Was Sin Atonement made by Jesus?

You may ask, why would anyone question that?  I will question it because I have found so much false about the identity of Jesus, the nature of God, the eternity of the soul, and so many other 'Christian' doctines that I must examine them all, according to the Scriptures and set a side church teachings.  After all, if Jesus wasn't 'God Almighty' as reported by the 'church' could he even be an atoning sacrifice for our sins? Does then Bible teach that we need an human sacrifice for our sins?  Doesn that Bible teach that we need any sacrifice for our sins?

IN SHORT... If a person believes that a blood sacrifice were necessary in order for God to forgive human sin, then that person forgot to study the Five Books of Moses. Even a single example where God forgave without a blood sacrifice would prove that this idea of needing blood for forgiveness is unbiblical. There are many such examples, but the most interesting is found in the Book of Leviticus. The reason this is so interesting is that it appears right in the middle of the discussion of sin sacrifices. In Leviticus 5:11-13, it states, 'If, however, he cannot afford two doves or two young pigeons, he is to bring as an offering for his sin a tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering.' In Jonah 3:10, we also see that one does not need a blood sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. There, the Bible simply states that God saw the works of the people of Niniveh. Specifically it says that these works consisted of abandoning their evil ways, and because they did, God forgave them. There are many other examples. Therefore, as was stated earlier, the idea that one needs a blood sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins is unbiblical.

All throughout Israel’s history, when they would stray and follow other gods, when they would fall into sins of any kind, sexual, moral, violence, drunkenness, social injustice, God would call them back.  But He didn’t tell them to bring more sacrifices, more goats and bulls to kill, but rather He called on them to repent and turn back to God.

One has to ask, if Jesus died on the cross for our sins, what part of Him died, the human nature, or His divine nature?  If you say his God nature (assuming he had one), then God died, that can’t happen.  If you say human nature, then we have a human sacrifice for others – and where was the God part when that happened.  Jesus, some say, set aside his divinity when he came to earth…but one can’t do that, it’s not a cloak one can take off and put on later.

The Bible says that everyone must die for their own sins.  The Righteous cannot die for the unrighteous.  Ezekiel 18:19-20. Deut 24:16, Exodus 32:30-31, Jeremiah 31:30, and Psalm 49:7.

The Book of Hebrews 9:22, and Hebrews 10:5 both point to the need of a blood sacrifice.  They both point to the Old Testament for evidence.  Hebrews 9:22 says that according to the Law, ’all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.’  That phrase, however in not in the Old Testament, and not in the Law.  It is made up.  Also Hebrews 10:5 misquotes Psalm 40:6, the phrase, ‘But a body You have prepared for Me”  is not in Psalm 40.

Psalm 40:6 (NKJV)

6 Sacrifice and offering You did not desire;  My ears You have opened.
Burnt offering and sin offering You did not require.

     Hebrews 10:5-6 (NKJV)

5 …“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
But a body You have prepared for Me.
6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
You had no pleasure.

Psalm 40:6, says “My ears You have opened”.     A major contrast in the original verse and the invented verse in the Book of Hebrews.

I believe that the Old Testament was inspired because it was endorsed and quoted by Jesus.  The New Testament has no such endorsement – and there is evidence that it has been edited and pasted together by some of questionable characters and questionable circumstances.  The New Testament is full of contradictions, inconsistencies and misquotes for the Old Testament.  As a young person, I was always told that the whole Bible is 100% inspired by God, and inerrant – and I believed it.  I’m not sure where that comes from – except mankind’s desire to have a solid rock to trust in and stand on.  There is a part of me that wishes I could be a lamb following the crowd, believing what they believe in, accepting church doctrine without question, and getting along with everybody.  But being a truth seeker, I must seek out God’s will and teachings, even if it goes against church doctrine and ruffles a few feathers.

Were the NT books were written by men. Inspired?  The New Testament has been assembled by Constantine and the RCC (and there is evidence of some editing), the same man that changed the day of Worship from Sabbath to Sunday, the same men that rejected God’s feast days and inserted the Pagan ‘Easter’ and ‘Christmas” and the same men that invented the ‘Trinity’. .  Those that assembled the New Testament books picked and choose what books to be included.  Many churches don’t believe that the New Testament is the Word of God, but they believe that the New Testament ‘contains’ God’s word, but is not entirely the word of God.  Scholars are mixed – total inspiration has to accepted on blind faith only.

Was Jesus a sin atonement?  John made it very clear that Jesus was the Passover Lamb, that’s why it was important for him to mention that not a single bone was broken.  And Jesus was slain that day that all the Passover Lambs were slain.  The Passover Lamb was not a sin sacrifice; it did not atone for sins.  The Lamb was simply killed and eaten as a memorial of what happened on that first Exodus Passover.

Did Jesus’ blood atone for our sins?  Was it necessary?  Or was this a late addition to the Bible?   Let’s investigate.

Did the Old Testament give any hint of human sacrifice could atone for the sins of another?  No

What God said, and Jesus quoted, Hosea 6:6, “I desire mercy rather that sacrifices…” I God saying that He prefers us to do acts of mercy, rather than sacrificing a ox or sheep?  Yes.   What about Jesus’ sacrifice, would God rather we did acts of mercy, as seen in Matthew 25 parable of the Sheep and Goat, than to put out trust in Jesus sacrifice?  Yes, I believe so.

Throughout the Bible Israel's CREATOR says that one person cannot die for the sins of another:

"Fathers shall not be put to death for their sons nor shall sons be put to death for their fathers; everyone shall be put to death for his own sin" (Deuteronomy 24:16)

"But everyone will die for his own sin; each man who eats sour grapes his teeth will be set on edge" (Jeremiah 31:30)

"The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father's iniquity nor will the father bear the punishment for the son's iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself" (Ezekiel 18:20)

"He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous both of them are an abomination to the Lord" (Proverbs 17:15).

"No man ['Jesus' included] can by any means redeem his brother or give to 'God' a ransom for him" (Psalms 49:7)

Weren’t the Temple’s bloody Sacrifices only for ‘unintentional sins’  Yes

Were sins forgiven apart from temple sacrifices?  Yes – in Old and New Testaments.

So are bloody sacrifices needed for forgiveness?  Seemingly not since others are forgiven apart from such sacrifices. – but a correct heart attitude is needed.

If sins were forgiven, apart from Temple Sacrifices, is Jesus’ blood needed for atonement our?  No, but a correct attitude of the heart is.

What about people that had no access to the Temple and its’ sacrifices, i.e., Daniel, Ezekiel and millions of other?  Were they forgiven apart from bloody Temple Sacrifices?  Yes

Did God even say, I hate your sacrifices, and I never wanted them?  Yes

Isaiah 1:11, “To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?” Says the Lord. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, Or of lambs or goats.

John calls Jesus a Passover Lamp, is a Passover Lamb a sacrifice for sin?  No.

Was blood needed for atonement for sins? No.  The blood sacrifice was only for unintentional sins, and even then, if you were poor, you could bring fine flour.  What God really wanted all the time was a humble and contrite heart (Micah 6:6-8) which He wanted in the first place.  In Jonah 3 we read that the whole city of Nineveh was forgiven without one sacrifice.  What did they do to get that forgiveness, was read in Micah 3:7-10 that they fasted, prayed and repented.  Obedience is better that Sacrifice – even Jesus quoted that OT verse.

In Luke 18 we read Jesus parable about the Pharisee and Publican.   In that parable, the Publican in humble repentance beats his breast and begs for God’s forgiveness.  Jesus said he went home justified, i.e., forgiven.  This man, according to Jesus, was forgiven apart from any blood atonement.

The two verses below allow for atonement for non-blood sacrifices.

Exodus 30:15, The rich shall not give more and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when you give an offering to the Lord, to make atonement for yourselves.

Leviticus 14:21, But if he is poor and cannot afford it, then he shall take one male lamb as a trespass offering to be waved, to make atonement for him, one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, a log of oil

Speaking of receiving forgiveness, Jesus quoted Hosea 6:6, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice’.  Blood atonement wasn’t desired by God, or Jesus, acts of mercy were.

Isaiah said God pardons those who forsake wickedness, and return to the LORD, in repentance.  This is a common them by the prophet.

Isaiah 55:6-7, (NKJV)

6 Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near.
7 Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.

Jesus said over and over again, that entrance into the Kingdom of God is only for those who do the will of God.

If Jesus was serious, and I believe He was, when He said, ‘blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven’, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth”,  “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled”, Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the Sons of God”  and ’Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God’, He wasn’t qualifying those people as ‘Christian’ who accept the ‘blood of Christ’ or only those who profess the ‘correct’ doctrine.  They were qualified based on their characters.   In the  Parable of the Sheep and Goats, the Sheep were saved because they acted in a ‘righteous’ manners, according to the Old Testament, in just acts of compassion, charity, mercy and love.  God saves based on your character, not your belief system.  If the belief system was the most important, God would have made it abundantly clear in the scriptures, and now it is so vague that theologians argue on all points.

I personally do not believe that it is a mystical washing away our sins by the blood of Jesus simply because we know the Gospel message.   Cleansing our sins is not done, apart from repentance.

When we ask someone, why did Jesus come to earth?  The typical message may be; ‘To die for our sins’, or ‘to die for our forgiveness’.   But yet our sins are not simply forgiven because Jesus died.  Salvation by faith is not a transaction apart from our character change.  That’s why James said faith without works is dead.   Can a person be wicked (law breaker) and still trust in God, and be saved?  As Paul said, ‘God forbid’.

Now Salvation is by Grace through faith, but that is not a simple transaction, like a financial agreement- or like a bartering transaction, or a trade, trading God faith for salvation.   A true, or saving faith moves us to have a Godly character, faith moves us to trust in God, faith moves us to love God, and faith moves us to keep God’s commandments. (True faith results in obedience and reverence for God)  When God sees evidence of our faith, He is pleased, blesses, and forgives us (Grace), His saints (Holy, or separated ones).  When God accepts us as His holy saints we are enter into a saving relationship with God.  Instantly then our sins are forgiven and we are justified.

While we were still sinners Jesus died for us (Rom 5).  It doesn’t say that while we were still sinners God saved us.

Our sins are forgiven in the NT era the same way that they were forgiven in the OT era.  If OT people could be Holy (Saints) in God’s sight, and be forgiven, as we know that they were, so then why do we need Jesus if they didn’t?

Well we know that God does not save us while we are still in sin and rebellion.  The only ones in Heaven are the Saints, the Holy Ones.  The Holy Ones are those that have repented and have separated themselves from this world with its lust, evil desires, and devoted themselves to God.  If someone thinks that blood sacrifices are for the wicked to get forgiven, atonement, by God, that is not possible, for the Bible tells us that the sacrifice of the wicked person will not be accepted; “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord." (Proverbs 15:8).

Sacrifices were not the main means of forgiveness or atonement, repentance is;

  • “To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me?” Says the Lord. “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed cattle. I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs or goats.” Isaiah 1:11

  • “For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.” Hosea 6:6 (quoted by Jesus in Matthew 9:13, 12:7)

  • “For You (YHWH) do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering.” Psalm 51:16

  • The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD (YHWH)." (Proverbs 15:8).

  • "To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the LORD [YHWH] than sacrifice." (Proverbs 21:3)

  • "For I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice, and in the knowledge of God [Elohim] rather than burnt offerings." (Hosea 6:6).

  • "Has the LORD [YHWH] as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken more than the fat of rams." (I Samuel 15:22)

According to these next few verses, if you want mercy for God on Judgment day, you better show mercy to others.  Do acts of charity, compassion, kindness, mercy, and love.  Not counting on the ‘blood’ but rather counting on God’s mercy.

  • Hosea 6:6 For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

  • Matthew 5:7, Blessed are the merciful,  For they shall obtain mercy.

  • James 2:13, 13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

A changed and repentant heart is required…blood sacrifice is not.

2 Chronicles 7:14 “when my people, who bear my name, humble themselves, pray, and seek my favor and turn from their evil ways, I will hear in my heavenly abode and forgive their sins and heal their land.”

Numbers 14:19-20 “Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people according to your great kindness, as you have forgiven this people ever since Egypt.” And the lord said, “I pardon, as you have asked.”

Psalm 32:5 “Then I acknowledged my sin to You; I did not cover up my guilt; I resolved “I will confess my transgression to the lord,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin.”

Proverbs 28:13 “He who covers up his faults will not succeed; he who confesses and gives them up will find mercy.”

Hosea 14:2-8 “Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for you have fallen because of your sin. Take words with you and return to the Lord. Say to Him: Forgive all guilt and accept what is good; instead of bulls we will pay [the offering of] our lips… I will heal their affliction, generously will I take them back in love; for my anger has turned away from them. I will be to Israel like dew; he shall blossom like the lily, he shall strike root like a Lebanon tree. His boughs shall spread out far, his beauty shall be like the olive tree’s, his fragrance like that of Lebanon. They who sit in his shade shall be revived: they shall bring to life new grain, they shall blossom like the vine; his scent shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

Psalm 107:17 “there were fools who suffered for their sinful way, and for their iniquities. All food was loathsome to them; they reached the gates of death. In their adversity they cried to the lord and he saved them from their troubles. He gave an order and healed them; he delivered them from the pits.”

1 Peter 4:8(NKJV) And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”

Ezekiel’s message from God is ‘Repent’, turn and live.  That exactly the same message that Jesus gave.  He didn’t tell them to go sacrifice a goat, sheep or on ox.  God want repentance.  Old Testament and the New, not a sacrifice, not even Jesus’.

Ezekiel 18:19 “Yet you say, ‘Why should the son not bear the guilt of the father?’ Because the son has done what is lawful and right, and has kept all My statutes and observed them, he shall surely live. 20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

21 “But if a wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 22 None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; because of the righteousness which he has done, he shall live. 23 Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord God, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live?

24 “But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All the righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; because of the unfaithfulness of which he is guilty and the sin which he has committed, because of them he shall die.

25 “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ Hear now, O house of Israel, is it not My way which is fair, and your ways which are not fair? 26 When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity, and dies in it, it is because of the iniquity which he has done that he dies. 27 Again, when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness which he committed, and does what is lawful and right, he preserves himself alive. 28 Because he considers and turns away from all the transgressions which he committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 29 Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ O house of Israel, is it not My ways which are fair, and your ways which are not fair?

30 “Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,” says the Lord God. “Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin. 31 Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies,” says the Lord God. “Therefore turn and live!”

“Turn and live” is another way to say, ‘Repent’.

Ezekiel 33:12 "Therefore, son of man, say to your countrymen, 'The righteousness of the righteous man will not save him when he disobeys, and the wickedness of the wicked man will not cause him to fall when he turns from it. The righteous man, if he sins, will not be allowed to live because of his former righteousness.' 13 If I tell the righteous man that he will surely live, but then he trusts in his righteousness and does evil, none of the righteous things he has done will be remembered; he will die for the evil he has done. 14 And if I say to the wicked man, 'You will surely die,' but he then turns away from his sin and does what is just and right-- 15 if he gives back what he took in pledge for a loan, returns what he has stolen, follows the decrees that give life, and does no evil, he will surely live; he will not die. 16 None of the sins he has committed will be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he will surely live. 17 "Yet your countrymen say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' But it is their way that is not just. 18 If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and does evil, he will die for it. 19 And if a wicked man turns away from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he will live by doing so. 20 Yet, O house of Israel, you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' But I will judge each of you according to his own ways."

Isaiah 55:6-8 “seek the lord while he can be found, call to him while he is near. Let the wicked give up his ways, the sinful man his plans; let him turn back to the lord, and he will pardon him; to our god, for he freely forgives. For my plans are not your plans, nor are my ways your ways.”

Isaiah 56:7 “let the wicked give up his ways, the sinful man his plans; let him turn back to the lord, and he will pardon him; to our god, for he freely forgives. For my plans are not your plans, nor are my ways your ways – declares the lord”

Isaiah 36:3 “Perhaps when the house of Judah hear of all the disasters I intend to bring upon them, they will turn back from their wicked ways, and I will pardon their iniquity and their sin.”

Contrary to the call for sacrifice, the Prophets said that it’s not sacrifices that God wants; it’s a humble and contrite repentant heart.  God Wants repentance, not sacrifice. John the Baptist and Jesus both called for repentance.

Repentance is a major theme in the New Testament as well as the Old Testament – and not trusting in a sacrifice, not even Jesus’ sacrifice – his blood will not save you.

  • Acts 26:20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and to the Gentiles also,  I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds.

Jesus taught and preached repentance for the forgiveness of sin, as did John the Baptizer and the twelve apostles.  And they did that in agreement with Ezekiel and the rest of the OT prophets.  Never did they seek forgiveness by simply believing a scrifice and(or) pleading the ‘blood’.
